SHINE – Self Help, Independence, Nutrition and Exercise

SHINE – Self Help, Independence, Nutrition and Exercise

SHINE is a free 12 week weight management programme for 10-17 year olds, delivered by our Health Improvement Team all across Bath and North east Somerset (B&NES).

Who is this service for?

10-17 year olds in the B&NES area.

How does this service work / what's involved in this service?

SHINE has a focus on three areas – nutrition, physical activity and emotional health and wellbeing. We support young people to make small but positive changes to their eating and physical activity habits. SHINE helps to increase levels of self-esteem and confidence, as these thoughts and feelings affect the foods we choose to eat and when we choose to eat them.

We provide opportunities to take part in activity twice weekly, with a great range of activities including Street Surfing, Urban Polo, Trampolining and Tae Kwon Do. We also encourage continued activity levels after the initial programme has ended by supporting young people with physical activity over a further 12 week period.

What families have said about SHINE:

“My son’s confidence has grown since completing SHINE, where he was encouraged to take more exercise and enabled to make changes to his diet at home. He loved trying different types of activities in a relaxed, friendly environment during SHINE – especially Tae Kwon Do!”

“I really enjoyed meeting other young people who are also struggling with their weight at SHINE. I was able to learn that I can maintain the changes I make to my lifestyle and have a more positive attitude towards myself.”

How do I access this service?
