Lifetime Sibling Groups

Lifetime Sibling Groups

The Lifetime Service explores many ways of helping families cope when there is a child who has a serious illness and as part of this we offer siblings groups. These groups understand the importance of offering support to brothers and sisters of a child who has an illness.

Who is this service for?

Workshops are usually run for children aged between 5 and 16  years old, with groups divided into age groups depending on need.

How does this service work / what's involved in this service?

To include brothers and sisters, we hold two day workshops in the school holidays where children can have fun and learn at the same time. Learning isn’t all hard work.  We will spend our time making things, drawing, painting and having fun!

The groups aim to assist with the following aspects of the lives of siblings of seriously ill children:

Education

The groups provide a chance for children to learn more about their brother or sister’s condition.

Expression of feelings

The groups provide a safe place to talk about how it feels when a child has a brother or sister who has an illness.

Self Confidence

The experience of attending the group aims to build children’s self-confidence as they realise the feelings they have are normal and find useful ways of coping with their situation.

Coping with illness in the family

Sharing ideas and learning new ways of coping will help children with the challenges that having a brother or sister with a serious illness can bring.

Friendship

The groups provide an opportunity for children to meet others who are in a similar situation and have fun.
