Adult Speech and Language Therapy Services

Adult Speech and Language Therapy Services provide assessment, advice, information and support for adults and their families or carers, who have difficulties with communication (speech, language or voice) and/or swallowing.

Who is this service for?

This service is for any adult over 18 years of age who lives in Bath & North East Somerset or South Gloucestershire and/or is registered with a GP in those areas.

Our Speech and Language Therapists are experts in assessing and treating adults with a wide range of communication and swallowing difficulties.

People with the following conditions may have communication or swallowing difficulties and often benefit from being assessed by a Speech and Language Therapist:

  • Stroke
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Dementia
  • Voice disorders
  • Head and neck cancer
  • Communication and swallowing difficulties associated with ageing
  • Motor Neurone Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Head injury, plus others

How does this service work / what's involved in this service?

Speech and Language Therapists (SLT) and SLT Assistants within the Adult SLT service, work across a number of teams and services –

  • Acute Inpatient service (all hospital wards, based at the Royal United Hospital)
  • Inpatient Rehabilitation Services – Sulis ward at St Martin’s Hospital (Main: 01225 831521, SLT answerphone: 01225 831616), Paulton Hospital (Main: 01761 412315, SLT answerphone: 01225 831616) and Henderson Ward, South Glos (Main: 01454 281122, SLT answerphone: 01454 315355 Option 2)
  • General Outpatient Service / Reablement Service, BaNES (Main: 01225 837581, SLT answerphone: 07775 630389)
  • Sirona’s Community Rehabilitation MDTs at Patchway (01454 315355 Option 2) and Downend (0117 3302505), South Glos
  • Sirona’s Community Neuro and Stroke Service (01225 831 544)
  • Sirona’s Parkinsons’ and Related Conditons, Clara Cross Centre, St Martin’s Hospital (01225 831 518)
  • Voice Service, based at the RUH
  • Head and Neck Cancer Service, based at the RUH
  • Sirona’s Complex Health Needs Service, BaNES (01225 831 566)
  • Community Learning Disability Team, South Glos (01225 831277)
  • Therapies Team, AWP Mental Health Trust

People will be met in the most appropriate place for their treatment, which may be as an inpatient on a hospital ward, in a hospital clinic, in their own home, nursing or residential home, or at a day centre.

Following assessment, goals for treatment will be agreed and any appropriate advice and information will be provided to all relevant individuals. If ongoing treatment is required, this will be discussed and planned.

How do I access this service?

You can refer yourself to Speech and Language Therapy for any difficulty with your speech or language.  This can be done by telephone or letter.

For a difficulty with your voice, a referral would need to come from the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) department.

For a difficulty with your swallowing, a referral would need to come from:

  • Your GP
  • A health and social care professional (such as your Physiotherapist or social worker)

What does this service cost?

This is an NHS funded service and is therefore of no cost to you.

We currently offer this service in the Bath & North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire areas.
