As you will be aware, the situation around the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is evolving. In line with national guidance, we are now in a position where we need to prioritise urgent care. This means:
- We are no longer offering routine clinic appointments, as all clinics have been suspended. We are continuing to offer telephone support to existing patients, but can unfortunately not offer telephone appointments to patients who have not had a referral accepted by the service.
- We are offering a specialist advice service to clinicians, via telephone or video conferencing. If you are a clinician seeking specialist advice, please contact the service using the contact details below.
- We are still taking referrals from clinicians. All new referrals are triaged by our clinicians, and patients may be added to a waiting list to be seen once clinics can resume. We cannot yet say when clinics will resume, but please be aware that there will be significant delays. If appropriate, the GP will be given advice and support regarding the management of the patient.
Urgent referrals: We are accepting urgent referrals. These will be triaged by a clinician and appropriate advice and support will be given.
Advice for patients
Although we cannot give patient-specific advice directly, the Pumping Marvellous, British Heart Foundation and Heart Failure Matters websites all have extensive resources, including information on the COVID-19 pandemic, and how it affects heart failure patients.
For specific advice on your individual situation, please speak with your GP.
For clinicians: contacting the service
Our opening hours are 09:00-17:00, Monday-Friday (excluding bank holidays). For out of hours enquiries, GPs are advised to contact the on-call consultant cardiologist/registrar at UHB/NBT.
Please consider urgent referral if patients BNP >2000 (no evident AF), decompensating symptoms, +/- echocardiogram, other red flags.
In advance of your call, please prepare the following:
- Renal function, FBC, LFTs and BNP
- BP and heart rate
